As part of our diversity campaign, 15billion are now looking to recruit young people for exciting IT apprenticeships with various different employers. These are fantastic opportunities for candidates who are looking to develop their IT skills and gain experience in the world of IT.

All roles will be for 30 hours a week and paid at The National Minimum Wage for apprentices.

Would you be interested in volunteering on a new Police project with Croydon Xpress? The aim of this project is to train 32 Croydon Police Officers on how to interact more effectively with young people.

At Eureka we commission striking and original photography (see the “Eureka photography” slideshow tab above to see some of the best). Could you produce something similar and be our next great photographer?

At Eureka we think that original and elegant photography can help to make science, technology and the environment come alive for our readers. Many of the photographers we have used have won awards for their work. We now want to find and inspire a new generation of young talent so, in association with Science Photo Library and the Royal Institution, we are launching our first photography competition.

We are offering three prizes, each of £1,000, for a single still image, a project of still images and a moving image. In return we’d like young photographers between 18 and 26 to send us original work on the themes that Eureka covers: science, technology, engineering, environment etc. Also you must explain to us briefly why your subject is interesting, ie the story behind the image.

Eureka Young Photographer Awards: Terms and conditions

The Eureka Young Photographer Awards are open to UK and ROI photographers: students, professionals or non-professionals.

Age limit: 18 years to 26 years (your age on April 30, 2012, must between 18 and 26 inclusive). Entrants may be required to provide proof of age.

Photographers may submit recent work relating to the themes of science, technology, engineering or the environment. Each entry must be accompanied by an explanation of no more than 100 words of how the work relates to the theme.

Photographers may enter any or all of the three award categories:

Single image award — 1 still image only

Project award — a sequence of stills on one subject, up to a maximum of 6

Moving image award — 1 entry of up to 90 seconds in length

Each photographer may make up to three entries (eg, you may enter the Single image award three times, or each award once).

The shortlisted and winning entries will be decided by a panel of judges.

No emphasis or special treatment will be given to any individual image or entry based on the photographer or the number of images entered.

The judges’ selection for the exhibition is final — no discussion or correspondence will be entered into.

How to enter

Entries must be made by e-mail, to

Images may be black and white or colour.

Still images must be uploaded as jpegs and files must not exceed 1280x1024px at 72dpi.

Moving image submissions must have a maximum size of 1920×1080 (1080p) and a minimum size of 720×576 (SD). The format must be: H.264 .mov or just a normal .avi — maximum file size of 100mb.

Videos should have a maximum length of 90 seconds.

Upload your videos to Vimeo or YouTube and send the link in your e-mailed entry.

Shortlisted photographers will be required to provide high-quality images and/or video. High-quality images and video must be delivered by May 11, 2012.

Photographers who have been shortlisted will be notified by e-mail by May 8, 2012.

The shortlisted images will be published on and a selection of them will appear in Eureka magazine, as chosen by the Eureka picture editor, and in an exhibition at the Royal Institution from June 6, 2012 to June 19, 2012. The winners’ work will be published in Eureka magazine on June 7, 2012 and on

Images may also be used in other material in connection with the Eureka Young Photographer Awards, whether inpaper or digitally, including for news or publicity purposes. Images may be displayed on a blog monitored by The Times throughout the length of the competition. By entering, you agree that you consent to these uses of your work. Publication of an entry does not necessarily mean that it has been shortlisted.

The winners of the Single image award, the Project award and the Moving image award prizes of £1,000 chosen by the panel of judges will be announced at an awards night on June 6, 2012. The overall winner will win a commission to create a still or moving image special project for Eureka magazine.

Each photographer exhibiting at the exhibition will be entitled to attend the Eureka Young Photographer Awards exhibition at the Royal Institution. Travel and accommodation expenses to the exhibition or the awards will not be included.

All copyright of any submitted work will remain with the photographer, however by entering, each entrant licenses Times Newspapers Limited a royalty-free, perpetual, worldwide right to use the entries as set out in these terms and conditions. By entering, you promise that the works are your own previously unpublished works. If any people are featured in the work, you promise that you have their permission to be entered in this competition.

Crystal Palace Football Club joins forces with Croydon’s young people and youth support organisations to counter the negative public perception of young people and highlight the positive contributions that they can offer to their communities.

In response to the Croydon riots and to counteract the negative perception of young people in Croydon, an event, Action for Impact, is being held on 02 February 2012 at Crystal Palace Football Stadium to showcase the diverse range of activities and support available to young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET). Action for Impact will also focus on the creative work many young people get involved in through community based activities tailored to enhance young people’s professional and personal development.

Following the recent riots, research into Metropolitan Police Service statistics show that while only 0.07% of young people commit serious violent crime [Independent Academic Research Studies (IARS) 2011], this is in stark contrast to recent research findings relating to perceptions of young people and violence.

The 99% campaign, run by the IARS, reported that 44% of the 1000 adults who were asked in a 2010 poll: “How many young people do you think commit serious youth violence” answered between 5%-20%. 25% of those asked thought that over 50% of young people commit serious youth violence (IARS 2010).

The summer riots did little to build local employers’ confidence in employing young people. According to Business & Education London South (BELS), a local youth charity, many young people in Croydon who did not get involved in the riots and who positively engage in services to help them into work, education or training are being tarnished by the negative public perception of young people.

“Most of the young people with whom we work have expressed their disapproval of the riots.” says BELS’ Chief Executive, Michael Manning Prior. “In fact, their main concern is to secure their futures through getting a foothold on gainful employment.

The aftermath of the riots has seen a general negativity towards young people and BELS wants to counter this by highlighting the enthusiasm with which the young people of Croydon embrace the support services provided to help them.”

Action for Impact is organised by BELS, together with young Croydon people and with the sponsors, Crystal Palace Football Club, who fully support and contribute to youth development in Croydon. Youth service providers such as Croydon Youth Development Trust, Positive Arts and The Crystal Palace Education Centre, supported by local young people, will give attendees the opportunity to have practical experience of film, music, sport, communication and art activities.

Action for Impact takes place on 02 February 2012 at 2.00pm in The Players’ Lounge, Crystal Palace Football Stadium. The event is open to all those interested in or working with young people aged 16-19 and each attendee is encouraged to bring along three young people to share in the enjoyment.

Today marks the launch of Zeitgeist ‘Young Minds’, a competition to find 10 pioneers, change-makers and leaders of tomorrow aged 18 – 25, across Europe, Middle East and Africa*. The winners will take their place alongside the greatest visionaries of today at Google Zeitgeist 2012 near London on May 20 – 22 2012.

From January 16 until March 19, the search will be on to find 10 exceptional, motivated and inspiring 18 – 25 year-olds from across EMEA*, who are making a positive impact in the world through science, the arts, education, innovation or inspiration.

The lucky winners will be invited to participate in Google’s annual Zeitgeist event, where previous speakers have included Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts, Google CEO Larry Page and Chairman Eric Schmidt. They will also win a brand new Google tech gadget and get the chance to take to the stage and have their voice heard.

Last year saw the first ever ‘Young Minds’ competition in both the UK and America. The lucky finalists won an experience of a lifetime, from meeting Chelsea Clinton and Will I Am, to taking part in panel discussions with Jon Snow and Martha Lane Fox (Co-founder

“I don’t know how to start this since I am not too good at writing blogs, but as a means of introduction to you all, My name is Serge, I served as the Head of Engagement for 4WD. This blog is a kind of good bye blog since I am stepping down from this position. The choice to step down from this position was completely my own and in no way reflects the quality of leadership within 4WD.

My time at 4WD has been short but very sweet, I have been inspired by the aspirations of the 4WD team and all they are accomplishing. My stepping down from the head of engagement position creates a position for any hopefuls out there, who are seeking a vehicle which will enable them to make a tremendous impact within society.
It’s been a privilege for me to have been included as part of the 4WD team and I have learnt a great deal about myself and about leading others through my observation of the leaders of 4WD who served as amazing role models and examples of great leadership.
I’m still excited and passionate about all 4WD is setting out to do which made my decision to leave really hard but the time for any decision has always been within the present so I made it.
